Subject Session Examples

Neuroscience is advancing rapidly, offering profound insights into the human brain while raising complex ethical questions. Neuroethics sits at the intersection of neuroscience, philosophy, and policy, addressing dilemmas such as cognitive enhancement, brain privacy, and the ethics of neurotechnology. Here, we particularly address how neuroethics applies to neurodegenerative disorders.

Using recreational drugs, like cocaine or alcohol, is illegal or comes with strict age restrictions. However, many people take these drugs, and drugs like them, even if they lead to negative impacts on their relationships, their finances, and their health. This talk will explore what happens in someone’s brain when they take recreational drugs, and why from a biological perspective, using these drugs feels so rewarding… But, it is exactly this feeling which can lead to extremely damaging outcomes for some people. 

Our brains store a wealth of knowledge about the meaning of things, including objects (e.g. what is a table for?), people (how is a police officer likely to behave?) and words (what is the meaning of life?). Meaning is at the core of everything we do, and losing our sense of meaning (e.g., through dementia) has devasting effects. Going as far back as Socrates, scholars have pondered how we learn meaning and, today, neuroscientists are grappling with how it is represented in the brain. Join us to learn about the ways in which cognitive science and neuropsychology have contributed to our understanding of this fascinating aspect of the human mind.

The human brain is the most complex object in the known universe. To better understand it, researchers have turned to computers to simulate, model, and test its workings. This relationship, however, is not one-sided: computer science has been profoundly shaped by the study of the human brain and mind. For instance, the algorithms behind everyday technologies such as predictive text, photo categorisation, and conversational AI are the direct result of cognitive scientists’ efforts to understand dreams, vision, and child language development.

This seminar will explore the co-evolution of the study of the human brain, mind, and behaviour alongside AI and computer science. From distant origins in ancient myth, to Alan Turing’s groundbreaking ideas, to modern cutting-edge systems like ChatGPT, we will examine how cognitive science has driven innovation in computer science and explore the limitations of current AI as a model of the human brain, mind, and behaviour.

Bullying in schools is a global challenge that can have long-lasting consequences. Children who are bullied often struggle with learning and face greater mental health risks. 

In this session, we’ll explore what drives bullying, its impact, and how changing school culture, and empowering bystanders, can make a real difference. You’ll also hear findings from over 12 years of Bangor-led research on the Finnish KiVa® anti-bullying programme, showing how effective strategies can reduce harm and create safer schools.

Left handedness is rare, stigmatised, and related to asymmetries in behaviour in how the two halves of our brain operate. In this talk, I'll outline some of the crazy and not so crazy claims about what being lefthanded means. I will also show you how your handedness relates to other asymmetries in how you behave. I'll finish off by telling you about some of our work at Bangor, which allows us to predict something about asymmetry of your brain for speech and language.

This session will explore the neuroscience behind social interaction and communication, and will introduce some of the psychological and neuroscientific processes involved in recognising emotions, understanding other people, and responding to social situations, as well as how researchers study these processes in the brain.

This session will provide an introduction to neurodevelopmental assessment, exploring how psychologists assess and understand conditions such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. The session will cover some of the tools and approaches used in assessment, the importance of considering individual differences, and how psychologists interpret findings from these assessments to better understand learning, behaviour, and development.

Reading together can be a powerful way to support children's language development. Adults can support children's language development through dialogic book sharing, an evidence-based approach that makes reading a more interactive experience. This session will explore how asking questions, encouraging conversation, and building on children's responses can help develop their language and communication skills.

Have you ever wondered why a song can change your mood?

In this webinar, we’ll explore the psychology of music. We’ll start by briefly discussing evolutionary theories of music perception, before looking at factors that can influence our appreciation of music. For example, we’ll consider how cultural differences, individual differences, and contextual factors can influence our appreciation and enjoyment of music. Finally, we’ll review research that has looked at the therapeutic benefits of music.

In a world where we are constantly bombarded with noise, the simple act of truly listening holds transformative power. This webinar explores how counselling - grounded in active listening, empathy, and psychological insight - can profoundly impact individuals’ lives.

We will explore the science behind therapeutic listening, discuss real-world applications, and examine why being heard is often the first step toward healing. Drawing on research and practice, this session will highlight the ways in which counselling fosters resilience, personal growth, and meaningful change. By exploring the mechanisms underpinning the power of human connection, this webinar will offer valuable insights into the life-changing potential of effective listening.
 

Knowing how to speak and understand more than one language is an amazing skill, and can have a positive effect on the brain. But, did you know that language can also change the way we see the world?

We can be more emotional in one language than the other, we can behave differently in both languages, and we are more likely to believe something in our first language. Thinking about these differences is very important in the health field (e.g., when choosing the language of a counselling session) and the legal field (e.g., when choosing a jury).

Join us for an engaging discussion on the complexities of language, identity, and well-being.

We provide a flexible range of outreach activities that can be delivered either on our campus or remotely. Where possible, we may also be able to deliver sessions in schools and colleges, subject to staff availability, location, and other practical considerations. These include:

Why do we need psychology?

Well, psychology is everywhere.

We use psychology in every aspect of our day to day life, from perceiving and understanding the world around us, to processing and exchanging language and communication with others, and to thinking about our own behaviour and that of other people.

So one thing that characterises Bangor is that staff are very approachable. Students are given the care and the attention that you would not expect from pretty much any other place in the UK.

As an international student, Bangor genuinely feels like a second home. You always know there is someone to talk to about your academic or personal concern.

The research and the neuroscience heavy modules, particularly the developmental and brain degeneration modules, have really accelerated my desire to follow a career in research.

Each of our undergraduate pathways are BPS accredited.

One of the beauties of having the same curriculum for year one and two in each of our pathways is that you can actually choose to change pathway partway through your course.

In my first year module, Brain and Mind, I got to work on a real human brain. Seeing it in real life made what we were learning feel so much more real.

One of the things we do here at Bangor particularly, is we try and build your confidence, and we do that through our oral presentation training package.

I'm actually not a great public speaker. However, I did manage to stand up in a lecture theatre full of first year students as a course representative, and that is purely down to the progress made through POPPS.

Graduating from a BPS accredited degree enables you to register for one of the professional psychology professions,
such as educational psychology, clinical psychology, occupational psychology and health psychology.

But actually, graduates of psychology can go on to a range of different professions where we use our skills and understanding
of people and human nature in professions such as marketing, healthcare, education, data analysis, and so on.

During your time with us at Bangor, we give you an opportunity to undertake work experience or a placement as either a two weekplacement opportunity during your summer between year two and year three of your degree, or as a full year placement that you can take during that time.

On my placement year, I worked as a learning support assistant in a secondary school. I worked closely with pupils dealing with emotional and mental health challenges. It really opened my eyes and showed me that I want to make a difference.

That hands on experience is something I will take with me into my future career.

Clearly, the world today is facing unprecedented challenges. Psychologists are the ones that can help and can find pathways to solutions through research, but also through counselling and seeing situations and how to solve them.

This is the job of psychologists. They are a huge source of hope.

And of course you need good psychologists. And that's what we produce in Bangor.
